The Scotch began making their whisky more than 500 years ago, and yet a dram of Scotch Whisky is as stylish as it is timeless, as sexy as it is smart.
The world of Single Malt Scotch Whisky — whisky made exclusively of malted grain and bottled at a single distillery — is divided into six regions: the Highlands, Speyside, the Islands, Islay, Campbeltown and the Lowlands. The key to knowing about Single Malt Scotch Whisky is knowing about these regions and the kind of whisky they produce. We’d like to invite you to journey with us through all six of these regions and the best of their styles of whisky — our six-part Scotch Whisky tasting series.
The second leg of our journey takes us to Speyside in the northeast corner of the Scottish Highlands, where the lush, fertile valley of the River Spey is the heart of Scotland’s single malt whisky distilling. More than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries are located in Speyside — including The Glenlivet, The Macallan and Glenfiddich — a higher concentration of malt whisky producers than any other region. And because the styles of whisky produced in Speyside (which is classified as a sub-region of the Scottish Highlands) have changed over the years, Speyside offers us a rich variety of whiskies. From the region’s old school whiskies — round and robust, with hints of peat — to its newer styles — lighter and more elegant, with few if any peaty notes — the diversity of Speyside’s character is just one of the many beauties of the region.
